My iPhones 5 has a broken home button and due to that it keeps going to DFU so I can't back it up. I just bought a new iPhone 5S and would like to transfer my messages and photos from my old phone to the new one. Should I just rip off the home button since I won't need the phone anymore? Any ideas?

You can easily just remove the home button. You need a couple tools, but I would not recommend destroying the phone to end that. You will need a pentalobe screw driver, razor blade or iSesame tool, small flat head or spudger, and then a small phillips head screwdriver. It might take you 30 min to 20 min to do if that.
