Broken iPhone screen. When do I pay Apple for the fix?

Hey folks.. Unfortunately, my iPhone suffered the unthinkable over the holidays. A cracked screen. While it still functions perfectly, I would obviously prefer to have it fixed.

I know about the $250 repair fee. However, I'm curious as to when I pay Apple. Do I pay for the repair when I initially bring it to my local Apple store to have sent out? Or rather, when it comes back?
