I broke my laptop a few months ago and when I was at home last week I tried to update my iPhone 4s to iOS6 via my home WiFi, the installation began and then the connect USB to iTunes image appeared on my screen and any time I try to turn it on this happens. I will be getting a new laptop in the coming week, is their anyway I can recover my phone without losing everything on - there is a year worth of pictures, contacts etc on it. Cheers, Dan.

Did you backup your iPhone using iCloud before attemting the update to iOS 6?

Since your laptop is broken, you don't have a local backup and you will need iCloud to restore your data or iTunes.

In what way is the laptop broken? Perhaps you could put the hard drive in an external enclosure, mount it on another machine, and import your old iTunes library.
