I've searched through posts and not exactly found what I'm looking for.

After falling asleep in bed, my laptop slid off my bed, hitting the tiled floor. It was closed at the time and the 'spine' (the hinge side) was the point of contact with the floor.

As I'm living in Africa (Lesotho, inside South Africa), I haven't so many options for repair.

The symptoms are as follows:
  • No backlight
  • Screen still displays desktop, etc. (I just cannot see it)

Additional symptoms that existed prior to this accident:
  • High pitched noise near the hinge, slightly to the left (this improved/disimproved as I angled the screen and disappeared after 2 minutes)
  • A feintly perceptible darker patch down the centre of the screen

I had my MBP checked by an authorised Apple repair centre before I came here. They couldn't find any problems.

Repairs are hella expensive here. Can anyone offer some thoughts about what might be wrong? Before I go and buy a replacement, it'd be good to know if there are reasonably affordable alternative solutions.
