Broken trackpad

A friend of mine bought a 2ndhand iBook through the paper. He knew the trackpad was broken (said so in the description). Has anyone had any experience in fixing a trackpad? What steps can he take to try and fix?

I believe the touchpad and top case is one piece? So that would mean getting a new top case.
