i've downloaded the HL-1240 CUPS drivers as suggested in this thread, and have been able to print the 'test print' page. but the printer still won't print any of the documents i'm wanting to print. i've tried pdfs and *.pages files...
i'm on a v1 mini with OSX 10.6.7. as the printer is too far from the mini and has a parallel port attachment, i've got it hooked to the mini via an extension with an adaptor.
any suggestions??

i also have a Brother DCP-145C which works just fine, but it goes through the ink like a hog, and isn't economic for large documents... to go from one printer to the other, i switch the USBs at the back of the mini.

You did not read the information on your own link:
Since upgrading to 10.6 I haven't been able to print using my Brother HL-1230 printer.
On 10.3-10.5 I could use the HL-1240 CUPS drivers, but not on 10.6.

...
There are newer drivers for the HL-1240 using OS X (HL-1430 use the same drivers too BTW) dated Feb. 15, 2010 (Language = Dansk version).

Hope this helps. :)
The Linux Foundation's OpenPrinting Project is the source for all things CUPS. It has a page dedicated to the Brother HL-1230. This page tells you that the HL-1250 print driver works with the HL-1230. At the bottom of the page, there is a recommended driver section. Click the directly download PPD link. It will download a PPD file that explicitly supports the Brother HL-1230.

thankyou very much. unfortunately, the printer still won't print as it says i need to update my software (You need to install software to use this printer. To install the software, choose Software Update from the Apple menu. If the software for your printer isn’t available in Software Update, contact the manufacturer of your printer.). needless to say, i do not have any software needing updating. :) but, would you know how to get around this problem?

hmm, sorry to edit this, but on closer inspection, either the ppd file hasn't installed (isn't on the software list after having been previously selected) or the software has pieces missing (Some of the software for the printer is missing. You may not be able to print to “Brother HL-1230 Foomatic/hl1250 (recommended).” Please reinstall the printer’s software.).

per this thread at ubuntuforums.org, i directed the printer to take the driver from the ppd file. i wasn't sure what to do with it, and this seemed like a reasonable solution.

Pointing to an external forum doesn't really answer the question. Assuming that you properly selected the downloaded PPD file, then it should have been copied into the proper location of your Library.

this would be the trouble then. the ppd file hasn't gone anywhere, and is simply in the 'downloads' folder.
where should it go? or, how should i install it properly?
