Browser issues with media stopping when not in the main window

I use Opera, Firefox, and Safari, and if I am listening to something in the browser window on youtube, or something of the sort, if I switch to another window, it completely stops. This didn't always happen, and I have no clue what is making it happen now. Any ideas?
