I just can't stand Tahoe's UI design, which is particularly awful in Safari. The lozenge/circular UI elements look awful.

And for the first time ever (literally decades), I'm considering switching to a different browser just to get away from it.

Is there a browser that offers the following?
  • Picture-in-picture support, so I keep watching videos in a quarter of the screen while browsing in other tabs?
  • Support for Apple passwords, rather than their own built-in password manager.

I'm going to take an off-the-wall GUESS that Apple's Passwords app works only with Safari.
I may very well be wrong.

OK thanks. Firefox seems to be the way forward, with the Apple iCloud password extension (and Firefox's own password management turned off). Picture in picture works fine. The only thing I'm missing so far is automatic completion of texted/emailed passcodes. Not a huge thing, though.

Also, Firefox is FAST. I haven't realised before how slow Safari is when rendering pages.

You can make it even faster (like 4x faster) by installing AdBlock (just a regular one from getadblock.com) and blocking external fonts in Firefox settings. You can even force your own font to be used on all websites with wide customization. Makes experience superior to any non-desktop. Firefox is my go-to browser on any OS, not just Mac

It's so disappointing. Safari's had its controversies, but I've always found myself on the side of enthusiasm. This week, I also found myself thinking along these lines for the first time ever.

As I'm sure people have noticed, the "compact" tab mode – desirable not to everyone but decidedly to many – is also gone from Safari for Mac, and the interface now takes up a minimum of about 92 screen points vertically.

This version of Safari – seemingly on all platforms and in Web apps – also doesn't color the toolbar according to the site's "theme color," which the Webkit team bragged about supporting in 2021. That feels more like a case of a feature that had to be temporarily dropped during a transition, so I'm still hoping it hints at a partial return to form later this cycle.

You can get another speed bump by switching to in-memory cache, rather than disk, which is the default.

Just set browser.cache.disk.enable to false in about:config

You can see the current cache status in about:cache

Both entries will read the following when things are set correctly: Storage disk location: none, only stored in memory
