Does anyone happen to know of a browser that works acceptably in Safe Boot, or if there's some way you can get a browser to work reasonably without a constant refresh when booted into Safe Mode?
Essentially the browser (Chrome, Safari, etc) refreshes constantly--and visually--when the page is loading, but after that it's stable and readable. This would be fine, except whenever a text box is selected, the page constantly refreshes (2-3x per second, highly visible to the eye) even when text is not being input -- simply having the text box active makes the refresh occur.
I know this is because safe mode turns off the GPU, but I find it hard to believe that a modern computer actually needs a GPU to render www.google.com . Is there any browser anymore that is very light and designed to run exclusively on the CPU, or am I looking for something that no longer exists, and I need to find a copy of Internet Explorer 5.1 that runs on OS X (<- a joke).
Oddly text boxes in other applications work fine -- searching in iTunes works normally, even typing in Mail works without any issue. Why does everything work so badly in browsers? Except for web browsing everything is usable.
(I have an old iMac where the GPU has died, but if web browsing worked adequately then it would have a good life as a living room media computer. I am not actually booted into Safe Mode, but the effect on the browser is the same.)
