Brushes in Illustrator CS3?

Hi - I don't know if anyone can help me - I have just gone over to Illustrator CS3 & when I draw with a brush I have made using the brush & pencil tool the line does not appear as the brush - just as a point line! When I used Illustrator 10 it was easy - I could even use the eyedropper to copy the brush appearance but can't even do that in CS3. I hope someone will understand what I am on about?

From what I can see, there isn't a way. A deliberate oversight, for performance reasons perhaps?
