So I'm a total addict of wireless headphones, I have something like 15 pairs if not more.
My newest and favorite solution currently is using my older 3.5mm Earpods with the $14 MPOW BT receiver. I also installed $11 EarSkinz onto the Earpods for a better fit and better SQ. It gives the music more air to breath and deeper bass due to a better seal in my ear. You could also in turn use your favorite headphones with the little dongle receiver.
I chose the MPOW because it can play and charge at the same time (this is harder to find feature than you would think) and has an 8 hour battery life on the battery. The BIGGEST benefit not listed in anywhere is that it's kind of an amp too. The output is FAR louder than the iPhone's. Currently I'm listening to a podcast at 4 notches on the Volume level of my iPhone while sitting at my desk. Typically I'd be up to 15 when wired, full volume is unbearably loud. The receiver also has FWD/REW and a Play/Pause/Power button. The FWD and REW buttons double as volume buttons if you hold them down (opposite of what I'm used to on BT headphones)
If you don't like Earpods I also picked up the Zero Audio Tenore headphones for $40... though they recently had a Verge article written about them so the prices are jacked up right now. They are seriously the best bang for your buck.
Anyway this is my current set up that is a MUCH cheaper solution to Airpods. About $25 to have wireless Earpods with good sound and fit... and you can both charge and listen at the same time too!
