buds not connecting

New 4s, I just downloaded from iTunes a bit of music, when I put the new buds in and tried to listen, no sound, though unplugging the buds and I could hear via the lower speaker.
With fiddling I discovered that by pushing the plug down I could hear through the buds, as long as I continued to press down.
I tried with my older buds and the same.
Anyone with this problem?

Sounds like a hardware issue. I'd bring the phone into an Apple store ASAP to have a Genius check it out.
