My wife and I were jostled out of bed around 4:45am by an emergency notification. It showed up as a “test” message. Emergency management officials have since confirmed they sent this out in error.

But my iPhone settings have explicitly turned off delivery of test emergency alerts. So… anyone know what purpose that setting actually serves?

My guess is that while it says test on the text it was probably not sent as a test one but a proper Emergency Alert which you have set to On.

Yeah, I think you are right. I just talked to a colleague and on his Android phone the text of the alert included the word “Extreme”, so that is probably a clue that it was not a test message.
