This is so irritating. Some months ago, I think it's been at least six months, may have been longer, a MacOS update has "broken" Messenger in such a way that it does not automatically put cursor focus on the message line. Now you MUST click on that every time you come back to messenger. It's beyond annoying.

I'm only posting this here in the extremely unlikely chance somebody at Apple notices and decides to fix it. The way I see it, I have a better chance of winning the lottery. But I can try.

I'm unable to replicate this behavior, so it may be something that's only affecting you. (Unless I'm not doing it right.)

Btw, there is a "Feedback Assistant" app in the Applications Utilities folder. That will get your feedback directly to Apple, rather than hoping they'll see it here.

I use Spaces. So whenever I move to the space with Messages on it, I have to click into the text field to type. Even if it's on top, it doesn't work.

What happens if the first key you type in the space is TAB? Does it move to the start of the text field, or does it move somewhere else, or is it ignored?

Nope, doesn't help. Here's what i did...

I went to messenger and just typed asdf in to the line. Then I four-finger swiped right to another space, then four-finger-swiped left back to messenger. I tried typing. Nothing. I hit Tab, then typed. Nothing.

I use Spaces too and this worked fine for me.

Just out of curiosity, when you four-finger swipe back to the space where Messages is on top, is it actually the active app? It should be, but maybe something else is stealing focus. (Can tell if it's the active app by looking at the menu bar. It should say Messages in black and not greyed out.)

Are you able to reproduce this with other apps? For example, if you four-finger swipe back to Notes, are you able to type in there right away?

It doesn't appear to be greyed out... if I hold down alt-tab (something I never got in the habit of using), the first "app" that is listed and selected is Finder. Hmmm.
