As you probably know, there are some screens in System Preferences that have a padlock icon to unlock in order to make changes (Security & Privacy, Startup Disk, Users & Groups, Date & Time), and they are locked when opening System Preferences. Unlocking one screen does not unlock the others.

There is also a padlock icon on the App Store preferences screen, but it was unlocked for me...so I locked it and quit System Preferences.

Now here is where the weirdness comes in...
  1. The following screens now show the lock icon when opening System Preferences again:
    • Energy Saver (the layout is a little off, overlapping buttons and text)
    • Printers & Scanners (nothing is actually locked)
    • Network (nothing is actually locked)
    • Sharing (not all screens/options within sharing are locked)
    • Time Machine
  2. Unlocking any of the screens in #1 will unlock all others in #1 instead of just that screen. The padlock icon is no longer shown on these screens after quitting and reopening System Preferences, except for App Store preferences which stays unlocked.
  3. Locking the App Store preferences screen and restarting the computer causes it to be unlocked again.
Slightly unrelated, but I also noticed some screens ask for different methods of unlocking. For example, it prompts for a password when unlocking Security & Privacy or Users & Groups; but it asks for Touch ID When unlocking Startup Disk, or Date & Time (or any of the screens in #1).

Does anyone else have the same behavior, or do I possibly have a bad install? I am running the latest version of High Sierra with all updates.

[doublepost=1511987621][/doublepost]The Energy Saver preference pane is fubar'd in HS... It has nothing to do with the padlock. I reported it to Apple, they announced my report as a dupe but later said the original report has been resolved. Although, 10.13.1 still shows the issue [bug]... And your description of it, matches what my experience. As for your bug, get in line and hope that someone fixes it... eventually.

Interesting... I've never had any issues with the Energy Saver pane unless I trigger the padlock to show. Perhaps your issue is also dependent on the Mac model, or resolution/scaling? I'm using the default resolution/scaling on a 2017 15" MacBook Pro.
