Buggy iPhone?

So when I plugged in my iPhone the screen turned off after showing the battery when you plug in the charger. Right after the screen turned off I pressed the home/lock button to turn the sreen on and it showed the battery was empty when it was really 90%. The battery I am talking about is the big battery indicator when you plug it in a charger.
