Buggy Tiger Behavior

Alright, so today I noticed that Mail was acting up. Each time I clicked on a new message to view it, Mail would quit unexpectedly. I didn't know why this was happening, so I went to disk utility to repair permissions. When I tried to do this, disk utility shut down unexpectedly as well. This is a new PowerBook, and it has been working perfectly since I got it in September. I did install a bunch of Widgets last night, including one that I made myself. Could this be causing my problems? Any advice?

Well, you should at least remove the newly installed widgets and restart, then see if the buggy behavior continues.

Maybe also try repairing permissions; you can use Terminal (type sudo diskutil repairpermissions / and give admin password when prompted) or something like MainMenu if Disk Utility continues to crash.

If none of the above helps, see if the problems also affect other accounts on your Mac (make one if needed). That will help diagnosing the problem further.

And, if all else fails, you could "just" do an Archive and Install...
