Unless the policy has changed, this only applies to users who purchase subsidized hardware. Verizon is not forcing you to change if you pay the $600+ price for a new phone.

The people who got nailed were those who pre-ordered a Galaxy S III before that policy went into effect, but received it after. It looks like you needed to activate your subsidized hardware before June 28 if you wanted to keep your unlimited data plan.

I know a person who went in to upgrade to the Droid Razr Maxx on July 2 from the HTC Thunderbolt. He was ready to pay the full price to keep his unlimited data, but Verizon wouldn't honor it. He escalated it to the manager of the store and was still refused. He was told by the manager that this may have been an option at one time, but it's not something that is set in stone and is subject to change at any time. He left and is still weighing his options.

just go in and buy the device without them linking it to the account. Tell them you are buying at full price as a gift for their bf/gf/whoever.

That store manager might just not know all the rules yet. I've tried purchasing online via verizonwireless.com and it was able to let me purchase at full price and keep unlimited data. Seems like just a random case of not knowing their policy yet.

As for the bgr report, if you see the comments below the OP stated he was able get the sales rep to fix the mistake. Seems like it was an automated email that got sent out.

BGR is doing this all the time now....posting a story with a misleading headline, later realizing they misinterpreted things but never updating the original wrong story. Shoddy blogging.

I think I have a work around. I have two lines. One with an unlimited plan and one without. Let's call the unlimited line #1 and the other #2. When line #1 comes up for the subsidy eligibility, can I use the upgrade on line #2. Then I will turn around and switch the phones around on both lines. I won't technically be using the subsidy on the unlimited line. If that makes sense.
