So, some background:
My current workstation in job A is a recent-ish iMac, 32 GB of ram, the standard 1TB hard drive, etc.
I have a 2011 Macbook pro 13" on a rain m-stand, and use the iMac in target display mode most of the time - sure, it's a bit of a waste, but the iMac is a time machine backup drive (over the same wire, gotta love that), and I offload heavy computing tasks to it (things that will take a day to run, that sort of thing). On rare occasions when I find myself on campus without my laptop, I can still use the iMac.
So - that's now, in job A. This August, I'll start job B.
Should I just buy a new non-retina 27" iMac and recreate what I have here (which does work pretty well)? Or, should I get a 27" display and a mini? It seems unlikely that a retina iMac will have target display mode available in time for me to spec out my office. The laptop is getting long in the tooth, but the most recent models don't really have anything that I'm dying to have (yes, that even includes retina displays).
(I'm assuming I'll only have around $2000 or so for hardware - if for some reason I have more the question changes and a mac pro might be on the horizon).
