Building External Hd for MBP (ICY DOCK)

I was considering to get a IOMEGA Ultramax 500GB (firewire)for my MBP.

However, my friend told me that for the same amount of money, I can get a better external HD with higher quality if i build it myself. Is this right? He said that most ready-to-go external HD's enclosures are low quality.

Have anyone heard Icy Dock? How's the quality?

I've used an 3.5 sata ICydock and was the best build enclosure I've seen

I think you'll be disappointed with USB, you should try getting a usb/firewire combo.

I have two Icydock enclosures and they are great: extremely high quality and will even spin down when idle on usb, which some other enclosures won't do.
