Hey yo, i'm not entirely hopeful that anyone here will be able to help, but if you can, thank you very much.
I was just about to record some stuff on my 500mhz CRT iMac (OS 10.2.8) using sound studio, through the built-in mic when i realized that the mic was picking up some pretty crazy noise. The input meter was about 75% maxed out, and when i recorded, i could barely hear myself over the feedback. I opened up the sound preference pane, and that input level meter is reading the same thing.
This is a very recent developement, i was just using the spoken interface for a hoot last week, and now even that thing is hearing nothing but noise.
So i clicked "soft play-thru" on sound studio so that i could hear the sound, while i did stuff with the computer to see what would change the noise, and it seems like its coming from the monitor. The sound all but goes away when the screen goes black, and gets loud with more white, and generally changes the sound when i move stuff around on the screen.
I'm guessing this is probably a serious problem that would maybe require opening the computer up in order to fix it, and it might just be cheaper to get an external mic (i've got some 30/40 year old mics lying around the house, but they ain't working too well.)
But if anyone's got any ideas, i'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jeff
