Since no dock is really ever made to be compatible with the iPhone in a case, and taking out the insert piece on a Apple Universal Dock at $49 w/ remote is a bit pricey, I thought I would try another approach.

I bought the bumper, but don't always use it, but still I didn't want to get an iPhone 4 dock. My wife is now using my old 3G, so I wanted to be able to dock either. My solution was to take the cover off my old 3G dock, snaps off very easily. At first I tried using a cutting tool like some have to chop the front off, but wasn't able to without murdering it. And I didn't like that look too much.

So I just carefully added some double sided tape in several places to make the sides uniform (essentially fill in for the missing cover), and then covered it in black electrical tape. It isn't the prettiest thing, but upon a cursory glance it looks pretty good. And I can use it with either my iP4 (with or without bumper) or my wife's 3G for charging or music, and no annoying 'accessory not supported' popups b/c it is a 3G dock. It doesn't look that great, but with the phone in it, you hardly see much of it at all.

Anyway.

I'll try to add another pic later with the phone in it. This was shot with the iP4 and I have no other cam at the moment.
