and it's still $50 bucks for the full version

I just don't see spending that kind of money (or any money at all for that matter) on a web browser being in the best interest of anyone.

I'll be paying the £24 ($42.90, though the actual price for the US is $29.25) for opera as soon as I get a mac. I'd pay it now but the licence isn't transferable between platforms and I'm on windows, plus the ad supported version is fine...

and it seems the only way to get innovation in web browsers is to pay for them, this bumper car has some features I've not seen in other browsers, and opera is the browser that comes up with the ideas everyone else copys (tabbed browsing anyone?)

from what I've read opera got there first.
and I've used firefox and it just isn't as good as opera. its missing so many features I use all the time in opera that its hardly any better than IE

I'd list why opera is the better browser, but I don't have all day
here is a link to something written by someone who obviously did have all day : nontroppo.org/wiki/WhyOpera and here's a comparison table

the first document says pretty much that opera has a few more features than ire bird(outdated) AND THE SECOND ALSO IS TALKING ABOUT FIREBIRD AND FIREFOX INTRODUCED MANY NEW FATURES AND YOU SAVE $30 no matter how you look at it with firefox

ok
well, persuade the firefox development team to add the following features and I'll switch

every new page opens in a tab, without me having to hold down an keys
re-arrange tabs by dragging them
open closed tabs by pressing crtl+z (complete with their history intact)
make the back button actually go back to the last page, instantly, without reloading it (and if you filled in a form, complete with the form filled in)
duplicate page (complete with their history intact)
open contents of clipboard (ie a url that I've just copied) in a new tab by pressing ctrl+shift+d
make browser take up less space (opera shows more of the web page even with an ad bar at the top of the screen!)
implement 'sessions' (a set of web pages, complete with history that can be saved and opened at any other time)
spell check
notes feature
full screen actually means full screen
more powerful skinning
browser spoofing (preferably in a menu, along with other options like enable cookies, block pop ups, etc, brought up by pressing F12 or another key)
mouse gestures built in
plus it would be nice if the download could be reduced by half, and the installed size by two thirds (or maybe more, as firefox doesn't include a mail program or chat client)

but, I do have to admit, firefox has a cooler icon

Sorry squire, I like me lack of adverts and smart form fillin'. But I realise it's all a matter of what you want to get out of it and how much you are willing to pay.

I'm not sure what smart form filling consists of but in opera there is a section in the settings where you can put in common details like name, address, username, etc and then when you fill in a form you can right click to add them to the form, or thay fill in as you type...
plus anything you have as a note can be added through a right click
if smart form filling is what is in IE then I'm glad opera doesn't have it, as it annoyed me (I have the simmiler thing in opera turned off)

and you really don't notice the adverts, in opera 7.5 thay are 30 pixles high, screen width google ads. every now and again thay even come in handy, as thay are relavent to the page you are looking at (like currently for me thay are a couple of mac ads)
people should really try out opera for a few days before thay judge it. I tryed out firefox for about a week as my main browser just so I could be sure that I'd made the right choise, and that anything I said in a comparison between the two browsers was true.

it seems strange that the world was happy to pay for browsers before IE, but since then no one would even think of it. its a good situation for me though, becuase you have to pay for my favorite browser it has to be worth paying for, thus making the developers work much harder to provide a better product than everyone else.

I tried it, but it just didn't stick. So I think I put it down mere preference. Sure, the IE filling was garbage and I like you switched it off. But I just have a personal hatred of all computer adverts. I can safely say I've never purchased anything from them. It's the whole 3rd-rate psychology behind them that just sends me reaching for an axe.

Opera could well be the best there is out there, and I mean that, it's just not for me.

yes I've seen the skins in firefox, have you seen the ones in opera?
there are more opera skins, thay are better quality, and thay affect more of the interface

and how doesfire fox take up more space than ad enabled opera i have both open now and fire fox takes up much less

make sure you have opera 7.5, download the 'breeze simplified' skin (breeze simplified native is slightly smaller, but ugly), then remove all toolbars but the page bar and the address bar (these are all you need for browsing)
then download the 'smoke' skin for firefox (smallest/nicest skin I tryed) and turn on only the navigation toolbar, status bar, and the tab bar

now firefox is a pixel or two smaller at the top, but then has the status bar at the bottom, which is hidden in opera except when pages are loading

or press F11 in both browsers (ctrl+F11, or cmd+F11 on macs, I forget which) to go in to full screen mode. opera wins hands down (and before you start moaning about the lack of page bar in opera, press crtl+F8 (I think the mac shortcut is the same))
(note : as 7.5 is only beta I think there is a bug on the mac version where ads still show in full screen. this will be removed)

you can have new windows aastabs you need to set it in preferences

I can't find anything that will stop specificly sized javascript pop ups opening in a new window...
can you tell me where the setting is?

keep in mind that ff is in o.8 its not even on version 1yet te point is ff does some things better and opera does some better but ff is free

I can't find anything firefox does better than opera (apart from the icon and lack of ads/freeness)
look at opera's download manager for an example of how much better it does things than firefox. hell, opera's download manager is better than the specific seperate download managers I've used.

here mail thunderbird from mozilla here chat chatzilla

I was just pointing out that opera is a smaller program, even with more features, plus a mail and chat client. you're reinforcing my point by showing that you have to install more programs, which will take up more space just to attain the functionality of opera.

netscape was always free

Early versions weren't. However, most of the time your ISP paid the licence fee for you, so it appeared to be free from a user's perspective.

haha, you typed 'think' insted of 'thing'. I do that all the time :D

I haven't tryed safari, its locked out on the macs I get to use at college :( we have to use netscape, which is the most awful browser ever, worse than IE.

I've seen screen shots, and the close tab button on the tabs looks neet, but I like my mouse gestures in opera (hold right mouse button, move mouse down then to the left to close a tab)
