Burn big files on dvd

I have some large dmg files in my hard disk. 8gb files etc. Packages that I cannot separate them to pieces all by myself.

I am searching a way to burn them to dvd-r disks.

I am thinking of two possible ways:
either split them to fit to disk (4,4gb) or span them to several disks.

Is there any way to do it or I am restricted to have them only on hard disk?
Any credible application for mac os x?

or take advantage of the dual layer writer 8.5gb disc's ?
