Burned DVD is empty in Finder

My brother just burned a DVD with some photos from his school (burned from a Mac Mini) and when he tried to load them onto his computer, none of the files would appear in Finder. The DVD said that 1.9gb of space was full, so I was certain that the files were in there. Accessing the DVD through terminal showed all the files inside, so I was able to copy them to his Desktop like that, but I'm still curious as to what might've happened that had the files missing from the disk. Anyone have this happen to them?
