I have an early 2008 2x2.8. I had two burners installed, and both have crapped out in the past two weeks. I'm only going to replace one of them.

My question: Before I pull the trigger on an IDE, is there a way for me to put a SATA in there? Perhaps using one of the two "spare" SATA ports inside the case?

Thanks.

Yes, it's actually very possible. You would just have to obtain a long enough SATA cable with a right-angled connector (so it clears the front fan assembly covering the ports) on one end.

But for the sake of simplicity, OWC does still sell an IDE DVD burner that would be a direct drop-in replacement for $33.00.

If you're looking for something that also burns Blu-ray, they have this kit that includes the proper SATA cable for installing the drive in the 2006-08 Mac Pros.
