Burning .avi and .mp4s to dvd

So i have a couple of movies that i want to burn to a DVD and have it play in most any DVD player. the files i use are usually avi or m4v and sometime smp4. how do i get these to a dvd that will play on normal dvd players. i tried using dvd studio pro but it seems to come de-interlaced quite noticbly(hard edges and lines visible) is there another step i can take.
 
Use an appropriate DVD preset in Compressor to create a ,m2v video file and an AC3 audio file from the original(s). Import the two new files (2 files for each video) into DVD-SP as assets for authoring.
