burning dvds?

i have a new 13 inch macbook pro running lion. i used a program called ripit to copy my movies onto my mac... i tried a couple different ways to burn the movies onto a dvd disk... each time i do it i put it in the dvd players in my house for them to say unknown disk but they work in m mac and on my ps3... I'm new to this stuff so I'm not sure what to do... also i have toast titanium 11 so idk if that can be useful... sorry if my terns copy/rip/burn are used improperly

I use Handbrake to rip DVD's to my mac. Then I use toast 10 after that.
