I have 15 items making 4.96GB which I wanna burn to a disc. Having a standard MacBook, blank DVDs are simply spat out of the drive which leaves me with normal blank CD-Rs. Apart from archving, what else can be done to make it all fit?

If it is an actual movie, you could try to eliminate the trailers, intros and other miscellaneous stuff at the beginning and end, to get it under 4.7GB so it will fit onto a dvd. Or, convert & compress it to a format that takes less space, like mp4 or divx........ this will reduce the quality a bit, but will work nonetheless.
check versiontracker for free/shareware apps like MediaFork (formerly Handbrake) and the like........
