What's the matter with Apple, don't they know there is such things as DVDs . I have quite a lot of DVDs from my day's with a PC, but now I have a iMac I don't seem to be able to use them except for 1 time recording. Say for accounting , if I use the disc utility I cannot use them more than once and the same with Roxio Toast. If the backup is only 39mb that is an awful waste of a DVD to only use it once.

Alternatively am I wrong with my approach's to use more than once ?.

What you are talking about is called "burning multi-sessions".
For CDs (no apostrophe) and Disk Utility: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1749.html

For DVDs and multi-session burning: https://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-193587.html

For Toast:

Thanks for your reply.
Yes I can get the Toast window open that you have shown and this will work with a CD-R, but it does not work with a DVD. That is my point, I would like to burn multisession on a DVD, which as you know holds more data.

In that case I think Apple should get their act together and make it so that DVDs can be used for multisession. After all I understood that the mac was supposed to be the "ultimate", for computing.LOL

That might be true, but as I gather from my experience, not many people use multi-session burning with CDs and DVDs anymore due to USB flash drives and other more reliable and cheaper media.

If you want, you can give Apple feed back here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ .

Also know that burning 36MB (example) to a CD or DVD with the help of multi-session will take up more than 36MB on the CD/DVD due to the process needing to burn additional data on it. But as I haven't burnt a multi-session CD in more than five years, I don't know how much storage that extra data takes away.

Many thanks for your very understandable reply.
