I have a macbook and have been backing up my DVDs to an external using Mac the Ripper. I would also like to make hard copies and do not have the software capable of burning these files onto a DVD. I know I need to shrink the file sizes and also another software to do the actual burning. I would prefer free software but I understand that the best option may cost a little cash. Thank you!

Burn is free and can burn VIDEO_TS folders, but you may need Double Layer (DL) DVDs for that.
HandBrake is able to compress the ripped video DVD to a smaller format, but then to burn the compressed file to a video DVD would mean to transcode the video again, as video DVDs need a specific codec, and HandBrake uses another codec to get such a good compression.
It would be easier to spend the money on DL-DVDs, as compressing and transcoding will take its time, depending on your MacBook, it can take up four hours, and maybe even ten hours, per DVD.
