as a recent widow I have to say trying to have some semblance of normality is difficult. things here in the US suck when it comes to burials, 3 weeks is a long wait time. lost my wife of 29 years 5-19-23 , I don't get to bury her until 6-10-23. by comparison in Mexico you are buried within 3 days. the wait time here gives a rollacoaster of emotion for everyone involved as you get to relive things 3 weeks after your loved ones pass.
my sister donated the land and cost was still near 14k. be prepared because things are not cheap.

It is good to see you again jk, I am deeply sorry to hear about your loss, my condolences to you and your family.

I did not realize things were so expensive. I have lost both of my parents and both siblings but all costs were covered by my cousin, gracious man. If I had been left to pay those expenses, I suppose it would've been simply impossible. At none of those points could I afford to even get a loan for 14k. I think I read recently that SSI only pays about $250 on the death of a family member, I knew that was abysmal but I didn't realize the cost was so steep. Very much something that needs addressed.

Sadly, all this is not a new problem...

Condolences for your loss.

@jkcerda: My deepest condolences to you on your terrible and tragic loss; I cannot imagine what it must be like to lose your soul-mate, life partner and spouse.

This must be devastating, absolutely heart-breaking and utterly soul-destroying for you.

Try to be kind to yourself during these difficult days and weeks and try to take good care of yourself.

Very sorry for your loss. While I have never experienced the delays that you are currently being forced to endure I would be livid and also acknowledge your point on the costs, they are beyond ridiculous.

Best wishes for you and your family during this difficult time.

Condolences. Not nice to have things dragged out over a few weeks.

In Canada cremation was about $2500 last time I was responsible for such a situation. Scattering of the ashes at locations of our choosing was free.

All depends upon the wishes of the deceased. Some wishes unfortunately require advanced payment or saving in advance.

Stay strong and all the best going forward.

That is similar to Fairbanks, Alaska. And something that my wife and I did for our oldest son who passed away on Saint Patrick's Day this year. My wife and I opted for cremation and dispersing the ashes around the places-outdoors- that he love the most.

Condolences to OP.

A bunch of my elderly relatives recently went through the process of signing up for pre-paid cremation plans with the big local mortuary business in town. Was $2,500 USD as well. Already had bought niches associated with church back in home town, but rethinking maybe want to scatter.
