The difference is the mechinism that is used, instead of a scissor's arrangement, it uses delicate little plastic hinges that easily break.

Its better then the first gen, to be sure but it's still a flawed design. It will fail sooner or later.I wonder if the 3rd gen butterfly keyboard design is much better because this is what the Macbook pro 13 inch uses
Wait until apple releases the updated 13 (or 14") model. Rumors have the release coming soon.and cannot afford the 16 inch. I want the 13 inch.
Reason I ask is that I am considering upgrading and cannot afford the 16 inch. I want the 13 inch.
Any MacBook using the old USB ports has a scissor switch keyboard. Don't buy a butterfly keyboard Mac. Just wait for the 14", possibly next month!Well I don’t have the money for it now anyways. My moms MacBook Air was the last with standard USB ports so I think it’s using the butterfly keyboard.

According to Jon Prosser, yes. I think he's proven himself as a reliable leaker so far. It's unclear whether or not it will be a 13" or a 14" but I'd still wait regardless. If it doesn't come out in May then they may just wait until WWDC, still not that far off.next month? I can wait.

Were the numbers really negligible, would a stubborn company like Apple introduce a 4-year free repair program and still end up backpedaling on the whole design?Apple on its website says its a small number of users that have this problem with the keyboard. I wonder if thats true.
It may be a relatively small number but it’s still not pleasant to type on at all! Trust me it kills your fingers after a while. It’s also 700$ to fix it after the 4 year warranty program ends! It sounds like you hold onto your MacBooks so I’d definitely wait if you can.Apple on its website says its a small number of users that have this problem with the keyboard. I wonder if thats true.

I can tell you I’ve had no issues with my butterfly keyboard after 2.5 years (I’m careful about crumbs and dust though)

Yes to type on my keyboard is no problem. Well I don't have the money now anyways, so let me cross my fingers that apple updates its Macbook Pro 13 inch line in May.

I am also careful about crumbs as I don't eat near my computer. Dust however is another matter, but it has no effect on my Macbook pro.
doesn’t matter about crumbs. The butterfly keyboard just gets messed up. My colleague and I both have the same machine and both of us had to have the keyboard repaired.
is the keyboard fine now?
Actually for me, not really. Oh plus the fact that my computer fully died. It’s a late 2016 so only 3 years and 5 months and now it won’t turn on :-(.
Had to buy a new computer. Got the 16” because I didn’t want to deal with the keyboard issues on the 13” anymore.
OP:
DO NOT... repeat... DO NOT buy a 13" MacBook Pro now.
The butterfly keyboard is a problem and you will regret owning it if it fails (highly likely).
WAIT for the upcoming 14" MacBook Pro.
It won't be much longer.
