Button On Edge To Disable Sounds Question ?

Hello,

Thanks for previous help; very appreciated.

New SE user.

Regarding the 3 buttons along the edge:
I understand that two of them are for making sounds louder or softer.

Re the third one; the one that show orange if pushed downward:

I was charging the phone last night, had the phone normally On, as was suggested, and apparently
a few calls and noises came in and scared the occupants of the room.

*If I push this button down, and the orange shows, would this disable truly Everything, absolutely All,
sounds ?

Would much rather do this if so, than shutting the phone off.

Mute Switch​

Put the iPhone into silent mode using this switch. Push the switch down (toward the back of the phone) and ringtones and alert tones will be silenced until the switch is moved back to the "on" position.
