Buttons on 3.1 IPhone not responding

I can get to my 'home' page, but when in an area, such as email, the 'cancel' and 'send' buttons don't respond. Also, in the 'Messages' area (texting), if I go into a persons area where I see the thread of texts, the 'Messages' or 'Edit' buttons don't respond. The Ap Store ap isn't working either. I can get into a description of an ap, but then the 'Search' button won't work to go back. I have to push the 'Home' button to get out. When I go back in, it's stuck on the same screen. I'm sure there are other aps not working, but there are too many to check.

The internet buttons work (Bing, Safari).

Any suggestions short of taking the phone into an Apple store?
