iPod touch Buy 3G instead of new iPods?

When the new iPod Touches come out, I will most likely buy one. Now, would it be smarter just to buy a 3G iPhone, and just not activate it, or wait for the new line of iPods? I mean, if I got the 3G, I could have a GPS and a speaker, and all sorts of other stuff.....

And have to break a contract with AT&T and end up paying a whole lot more money.

Get the iPod Touch unless you want to phone. And if you want the phone get the iPhone. Simple as that.

There were articles a month ago claiming Apple WILL sell iPhones that are activated but not cell able without plans.... SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE.

And it has been left that vague ever since.

The price would be $600+, though. And I think I would actually purchase one if they offered it TODAY. If they offered it after the updates on (supposedly) September 9th I am not so sure I would buy.

you have to activate the iphone in store. no way around it
