If I decide to pre order the "4g" from Apple.com, will I lose the discount I currently have on my plan? Seems like I have heard of this happening in the past...

No, you will not lose your National Account Discount (NAD aka FAN).

In 2008 there were issues with accouts that had FAN numbers attached when purchasing directly from Apple. Last, year we were able to pre-order from Apple without issue except for a limited group of specific Corporate accounts. As to what the challenge will be this year, stay tuned but again, you will not 'lose" your discount.

The original iPhone didn't have discounts as they were profit sharing with Apple and Apple didn't allow it.

When I got the iPhone 3G, there were issues where they couldn't add it if it had a FAN. The "fix" was they removed it then readded it back. They have since fixed that issue by the time the 3GS came out and I don't expect anything to change. It wasn't specifically with purchases at the Apple store, it happened with AT&T stores too.
