Buy a 3Gs 32 gb and cancel contract after first month, same cost as 3g 16 gb?

I know the first month isn't over for people, but is it correct to assume that if I get a 3Gs 32 gb phone and cancel it that it will be the same amount as the 3G 16 gb was a year ago? As in

299 - phone (I'm a new customer)
35 - activation
75 - first month contract and taxes
170 - early temination fee

so I'd pay around 580 for one? (maybe 600 after all applicable taxes)

Is there any way to get the phone for less than this price? Could I find a friend with a 3G on AT&T that can get the phone for 499 and get that for less? Or is there a problem with that?
