Just wondering if it is still possible to purchase AppleCare in any way for an iPhone 5? Was bought last October and selling it on to a family member so would like to get it covered for hardware problems etc. But having looked at the new AppleCare+ T&C's it seems that it has to be purchased within 30 days? I'm sure in the UK we used to have a year from purchase before couldn't buy AppleCare?

In the U.S. you have 30 days from the date of purchase to buy AppleCare.

Not sure for U.K. though. My guess would be that it's the same.

You are thinking of AppleCare+.

As I recall, normal AppleCare is still available but from a restricted number of channels, I think it's by telephone from Apple only now.

On Apple's U.S. website the only type of AppleCare available for the iPhone is AppleCare+.

Important notes

AppleCare+ must be purchased within 30 days of the date you bought your new iPhone. If you did not purchase AppleCare+ with your iPhone, you may purchase it at an Apple Retail Store or by calling the AppleCare Contact Center. To buy AppleCare+ at an Apple Retail Store, a Specialist will first need to verify your iPhone purchase date and confirm that your iPhone has no pre-existing damage. Find an Apple Retail Store. To buy AppleCare+ from the AppleCare Contact Center, you will be required to verify your purchase date and run a diagnostic to confirm that your iPhone has no pre-existing damage.

The OP who is asking the question is in the UK if you read through his post.

The Apple UK site still refers to the old version, which it calls AppleCare Protection Plan and the new as AppleCare+.

When I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan or AppleCare+, do I need to register it?
You do not need to register AppleCare+ as it is always automatically registered.

In most cases, if you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan at the same time as your Apple hardware from the Apple Online Store, the Apple Retail Store or selected Apple resellers, you will not need to register it as your AppleCare agreement will be automatically registered.

With automatic registration, you will receive a proof of coverage, either immediately in the form of a receipt that indicates the end date of your AppleCare product coverage, or within 30 days in the form of a Proof of Coverage certificate.

You’ll need to register your AppleCare Protection Plan only if you purchase the plan and your covered product separately, or if you purchase your hardware from a reseller who does not automatically register the plan.

You can register your AppleCare Protection Plan here or contact Apple at the phone number included in your AppleCare Protection Plan package. To verify that your hardware is covered under the AppleCare Protection Plan, click here. The registration process can take up to 24 hours to be visible in Apple’s systems.

Your AppleCare Protection Plan and AppleCare+ coverage start from your hardware purchase date. There are many benefits to registering your AppleCare Protection Plan as soon as you purchase it.

For example, after you register, Apple will have your hardware, AppleCare Protection Plan and personal contact information on file. When you contact Apple for service or support, Apple can access your information straight away and start addressing your issue, rather than spending time verifying your eligibility.
