I was going to buy my mother an iPad 2 while I am in NYC, but I'm seeing that it'll be (close to) impossible to get one right now. Now, I don't think my mom cares if she gets an iPad or an iPad 2 (she doesn't even know she's getting one), so that doesn't really matter. However, as I did some light research, it turns out that getting an original one is equally hard. So, where can I be sure to find an iPad? I'd prefer it to be walking distance (15-20 blocks) from 5th/42nd. It'd be cool if it was decently priced as well.

You won't get an iPad 1 at an Apple Store. If your Mom doesn't mind used, check NYC Craigslist and Kijiji and see if anyone will meet you in your desired area for your price.

I know I won't get one in an Apple store, but there's other electronics stores that sell iPads, right?

I've thought about used, but I don't want to buy an iPad used, especially in a foreign country.

The original iPad is sold out everywhere, as far as I know.

Ok, and the iPad 2 is still sold out practically everywhere/people still get in lines before every shipment.

That's correct.

In some countries (Canada, UK, etc...) you can use an online reservation system from 9pm the previous day to reserve your iPad for the next day. Alas, not in the US.

Try Tekserve, Datavision, B&H, Adorama, Mikes Tech Shop, Digital Society, Best Buy.
