OK I want to get an iPhone 3G but I don't want to have a new contract for 2 years. So the logical choice is to get the $599 8GB iPhone which doesn't require a contract.

My question is that, since I already have an ATT family plan, can I just buy the iPhone for $599 and use it in place of my old Nokia?

Would I have to get a new number for the iPhone, as in get a new account?

I don't really need the data plan as I am almost always within range of wifi and I don't want to pay any activation fees, etc as I already have an ATT account...

Thanks!

Why get a 3G iPhone and not use 3G? Why not just go for a Gen 1 iPhone and cancel Edge. Seems silly to get a 3G and not use 3G for the GPS and data....a gen 1 will still get you chicks just like the 3G. : )

where can i get a first gen iphone? i don't trust ebay or any other websites like that.

anyone here want to give me their old phone? :)

where can i buy the 3G in 599$

Hey,

I am in NY right now - looking after the iphone 3G 8GB without the contract.
i understand it supposed to cost 599$.
Do you know where can i buy it?

Thanks!

You can't buy a 3G for $599 without a contract yet. $599 is the unsubsidized price, but you can't buy it without a contract from AT&T yet.

You can get one from craigslist or eBay without a contract, but they're selling for about $800+ right now.

$199 + $25 tax + $40 + $26 + $175 + misc ~$50 = less than $500.

More work...but cheaper alternative.

what are the other prices for?

i also read somewhere that if you cancel the contract, ATT will make you pay extra (in addition to ETF) if you keep the phone? is that true?

you can't keep the phone if you cancel in the first month, has to be in the second month so you would have to pay 2 months worth of voice+data

so i can get an iphone 3g for 199 + 12 (6% tax) + 36 (activation fee) + 140 (for two months charges plus taxes and fees) + 170 (ETF) = $557

My understanding is the no-contract AT&T phones will be available for $599/$699. The only requirement is that they leave the store activated on some sort of AT&T plan.

So, I would imagine, if you want to use it on your plan, but without a contract, that's okay. They would just put it on your current plan, and charge you the $599...

do you know when and where it become optional to buy the iphone without a contract?

I believe that to be false. AT&T can't charge you for the remaining of the 2nd month if you decide to cancel.

oh so as long as it's after 30 days, i can cancel and they will do a pro-rated charge for the rest of the second month...
