buy Iphone 5 online & pickup in the store without contract???

I am in NYC, tried to buy couple iphone 5 in full price, but no luck. All the stores told me they sold out. WHY!!??

b.c they only are selling on contract phones at those locations. There is such a high demand, why not? Apple gets its money either way...whether it be from you or the carrier.
