I am in the market for a new top-of-the-line iMac (24", 3GB RAM, 750 GB HD, 2.8GHz) but am unsure if I should make the purchase now or just wait until after Macworld (January).

A couple of things making me consider waiting:
1) Screen problems current iMacs have been experiencing.
2) Blu-Ray coming soon?
3) Processor and graphics cards speed bumps coming?

Do you guys think the iMac will be updated at Macworld? If not, when do you think it will be?

And when it is... what do you expect the changes to be?

I am so excited! I don't know if I can wait! :)

Not very likely the iMac will be updated at MacWorld, so don't hold your breath. I could be wrong, but there are many big ticket items that need updating that haven't been updated and with the iMac just recently being updated this year, it's just not likely. I would expect some form of refresh around May or July of 2008.

don't expect these updates for a while. we're waiting for the mobile penyrn and blu rays in the pro machines first.

Mobile penyrn in a pro machine?
Macbook Pros?

Will it come to the Macbook Pro before the iMac?

OH, really? that long huh... DANG.

When it comes in "May or July" what do you think will be updated?

If I have $2500++ to spend on an iMac.. I can wait 2 weeks.

Sure... but what would 2 weeks buy me? Macworld isn't for another 3-4 weeks (right), and it seems like most people think there won't even be updates at that point?

Then buy one now... if you're too impatient to wait 3 weeks and 3 days to spend thousands of dollars than by all means go ahead and goodluck!

Ok... if you guys had to bet money...

WHEN do you think the next iMac update will be?
and
WHAT do yout hink the upate will likely include?

No idea... i just think by the time Apple updates its Pro desktops, and whatever else it needs to focus on (ie: macbook touch), it'll then focus back on the iMac. I would speculate it would give the new iMac the same mobile penryn chip the MacBooks will ultimately be getting, considering that's all the iMac really is (a laptop on a stick). I think it won't be until then that Apple will give the iMac BluRay capability (if they decide to do it at all). I just know Apple isn't going to tick people off immedietly after a huge holiday season with another upgrade to a big line item (like the iMac)... they will wait.

Whatever you do, I would wait the couple weeks for Macworld. Who knows what will come out then. Just stick it out.

At the same time, I have a 24" imac from before the most recent update (white one, 2.33 ghz), and I couldn't imagine it being much better. Its everything I ever wanted, even a year old. I have zero jealousy for the most recent update.

Thanks for the input... although I am not sure I completely agree.

In 2006, new iMacs came in January.

Apple doesn't always seem to care about 'ticking people off'.
(i.e. The iPhone 1/3 price reduction 2 months after launch.)

This seems like a good smart choice to me. There doesn't seem to be a great chance that they upgrade the iMacs then, but atleast there is a chance...

Thanks!

I'm not against waiting, but the iMac you referenced came in January only because Apple needed to upgrade the line to Intel. There is no longer a need for another major revision with so much on the table already and since Apple already did a major revision to the iMac in June.

I was ready to buy a new iMac this time last year. I decided to wait until after Macworld. Nothing mentioned there. Then rumored to update in March, then May...They finally updated in August. I bought mine mid October...then 3 weeks later Leopard came out.
There is no right time to buy. Yes I'd wait until after Macworld at this point, but if you don't see an update I'd jump right in or else you'll be waiting forever for the right time.

The bottom line is that Apple will update the iMac whenever they're good and ready. That may very well be at Macworld next month, or it may not be until next Summer. Nobody outside of Apple has the answer, that much we do know for sure. If it were my money though, I certainly wouldn't buy one before the afternoon of January 15th anyway.
