Contract renewal is up .. is it REALLY daft to buy a 16 Pro Max now?

I have a 15 Pro (not Max) already, but the Max would give me some needed battery life and a roaming contract that i need for travelling.

If its daft to buy this close to the 17, i could add a bolt on for roaming to tide me over. Just curious if it is sensible to hold or not.

It depends on how urgently you need the device. The 16 Pro is solid and a safer option price wise but if you're coming from a 15 Pro I'd wait for the 17 at this point unless you absolutely need a new phone right now.

I would wait

Well it depends if you want a 16 PM that's made in China or 17 PM that might be made in India. There is also the potential tariff situation.

If anything I would guess the quality is gonna be worse for the ones made in India. China has it all figured out by now. If it’s a thing to even consider…

What do you use your 15pm phone for at the moment?? Photography, video, or just a phone for web search and email? Gaming? The 17 pm is supposed to 12gb of ram. I’m a photographer and I use the cameras heavily. If you are a photographer, I’d wait for the 17 Pro Max

Either one is not daft (get phone now or wait), but what IS daft is paying what people pay to companies via 2-year contracts, that ultimately cost way more annually, even with the illusion of a “free phone” every two years or so. Just my experience with the “contract” system at a few of the major carriers. I’m open to being mistaken if something has changed… or maybe for OP’s travel needs it’s worth it.

Wait, if only to see what happens after 17s are available. You can still make the same decision in Sept., but with more info.

I did not wait.

I ended up moving from a 15P to a 16PM and all in, i got £50 cash back in my hand, i pay £2 less per month and I've got a newer phone, a bigger phone and a new contract tariff with significantly more benefits than the last one.

Decided i could have waited, but might not have got a similer offer come September, so i decided to opt for it now.

By now you should be able to get a decent discount on the 16PM. On the other hand, you have 15P, so jumping to the 17PM will give you the biggest 'gain'.

I would have waited. But enjoy your new phone, it's a great purchase!

Enjoy the phone man! Yeah, sometimes it is not about the phone but about the carrier and their offers.

I don't think the 17PM will be that different to the actual 16PM so, you are good

I would wait and see the changes on 17PM. After 2 month if you don't see that much difference, then buy 16PM.

You cannot go wrong with the 16 PM. I like mine better than any other iPhone, by a lot. The caseless titanium alloy frame has been dropped on concrete dozens of times with no damage except a few rough spots I could sand out if I wanted to.

You can always trade in your device for the 17 when it comes out.

There probably isn’t a wrong answer, but I think waiting for the 17 is the more right answer.

Wait. If you don't like something about the 17 Pro when announced, the 16 Pro will be less. Of course carriers might deals might be significantly different now vs then.

Risk is inventory in that scenario - the 16 Pro/Max will be discontinued and it will quickly be harder to find.

I am still running my 13PM. I had a 12PM and was fairly happy with it but I actually lost that phone and had to use my old broken X at the time and I was going to be seriously lusting after the 120hz display released with the 13 Pro anyway.

Wife has a 16P (non max) coming from 14P and says the battery is SIGNIFICANTLY better. she's on her phone all day and feels the 16P's battery is adequate in a way the 14P was never, so that would bode really well for 16PM's battery life.

I'll hopefully pick up a 17PM but the way it's looking this 13PM still has plenty of legs... I may as well sock the, what, $1.3k, for a 17PM away for the RTX 5090 fund... Battery still basically lasts two days, and I'm good at replacing batteries myself at this point. I love that the battery kits now come with replacement phone waterproofing gaskets. Primary consideration actually is giving my 13PM to my mom, my poor mom is still on my old 6S Plus. She's mainly driving my old 2018 ipad pro though. I kinda miss that thing, this m1 ipad pro has garbage battery life.

I have an automation I set up a while back where it checks during wind down if battery is below 40% to turn low power mode on. This helps it not be dead in the morning for those nights that I forget to put it to charge. I got my 120hz display, I guess the dedicated camera button is nice, 5x telephoto is nice, titanium body is nice, but I don't see much truly compelling about the newer phones.
