I'm thinking about getting an 2nd screen for my iMac 27" late 2013.

Do an old iMac need to be running or can it be sleeping, for it to be used as a 2nd screen for my iMac?

As far as I know, if the old iMac is pre-thunderbolt, it can be used as a screen for a PS or Xbox.

That would honestly be a waste of a good old iMac IMO. With 27-28" 4K monitors dropping to that 400 dollar range, I would honestly recommend grabbing one of those and hooking it up via mini dvi to dvi and enjoying the investment and extra screen real-estate. These 4k monitors also can be used with PS or Xbox via the hdmi inputs, and most if not all have sound output to speakers or built-in speakers. My two cents :)

I agree. Unless you have a need for the computer itself, it would be much more cost effective to just grab a monitor.
