New to the iPhone business and need some guidance from you veterans. My daughter is headed to Brussels for a year and is looking for a phone to use over there. She says the providers in Brussels don't include phones with their service and she's better off taking an unlocked GSM with her and activating it on whatever provider she has there.

Is it possible to get a first generation iPhone, unlock it, and send it with her? She wants to text message and wants a phone that has a better "keyboard" than just a regular type cell phone.

Thanks for your advice.
