Hi This is my first time posting a thread on this forum

I have been a PC guy and now I wanted to change to a Mac.

Lately I have been considering these two options I see from craigslist:

1.) White Macbook for $400

Description:

The Apple MacBook "Core Duo" 2.0 13-Inch (White) features a 2.0 GHz Intel "Core Duo" processor (T2500), with two independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip, a 2 MB shared "on chip" level 2 cache, a 667 MHz frontside bus, 512 MB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) installed in pairs (two 256 MB modules), a 60.0 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive with "Sudden Motion Sensor" technology, a 4X slot-loading double layer read (single layer write) DVD/CD-RW "SuperDrive", an Intel GMA 950 integrated "graphics processor with 64 MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory", and a 13.3" widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display (1280x800 native resolution).

2.) iMac 2011 model 21.5-inch for $899

Not much is said about this one except it is still under apple warranty.

Any advice?

That much for a 2006 core duo whitebook is a pretty nice ripoff. I'd pay $250 at most for it. The iMac is a much better computer and a much better deal.

It depends on what you want to do with it.

That MacBook will not run OS X Lion (well), whereas the iMac will.

I might need to do some programing (R and SAS to be specific)

but most of the time I guess just movies, music, surfing the web.

Possibly some games too, like League of Legends and/or Age of Empires III

The guy said he got it not too long ago

which made me wonder why he/she is even selling it

the attractive part is the Apple care to me I guess

The iMac is the better deal. If there is an Apple store close, try to get him to meet you there.

I have an Apple authorized retail store around me

but may I ask why meet him there?

You're a PC guy switching to a Mac. Dealing at the Apple store would be smart because store employees would gladly help you should you have any questions. Wouldn't you want peace of mind? Also, it's always better to meet at a public location if possible, not in a stranger's home.

$400 for an '06 white MacBook is horrid. It has the bare minimum of RAM, hardly any HD space, and a processor that won't even support Lion.

The iMac is the better deal.

But lots of sites that deal in used / refurbished macs want $450 and up for 2006 MacBooks.
