Hi

I'm looking into getting a Time Capsule 2TB.
As wifi base station, file/printer server, and for wireless time machine backups.

It's at least 2-3 years old now, but expensive.
It does have 802.11AC though, which is still quite fresh.

Should I buy it, or do you think Apple will launch any upgrade in the near future?
Any rumors?

Any rumors?

There have been some advances in wifi chips that could be incorporated into a new model and they are way overdue for an update, but there have been no rumors at all. Like Sam said, get a refurb if you buy one.

If you buy the time capsule now, and a new one comes out, you can just buy a new AirPort Extreme as a base station and the time capsule you just bought as an extender

I just saw an offer for a used Time Capsule 1 TB 3rd generation, sold for about 80$.
Wouldn't that be fine, and work for backups via wifi?

Yeah, it wouldn't have 802.11ac but should work ok for backups.

Got my 2TB refurb timecapsule in the mail from apple yesterday. $179 vs $299 new. Came with all the shrinkwrappning, not just on the box but the product too, literally couldn't distinguish from brand new!

Good Show! Last March I bought the same TC from the Apple On-Line Store and the price was $199.

On second thought.. I think I will wait 6-12 months, and see if Apple dishes up an upgrade.
I hope so.
At least, I could find a cheap AC version then (I can't find any refurbished ones with ac now).
But I'm in no hurry. Got an ok cabled solution until then

Don't you think the odds are pretty good, that they will upgrade the TC line in the near future?
Cycle wise, it makes sense to come in 2016.

Here is where you can get a cheap refurb current generation one: http://www.apple.com/shop/product/FE177LL/A/refurbished-airport-time-capsule-2tb

I'm not sure if apple will be updating these soon or not, it's anybody's guess honestly.
