Buying 2g Iphone and Unactivated t-mobile sim

I'm getting an unlocked 2g iphone and also purchasing a new unactivated t-mobile simcard. How do I go about activating the sim? Can I place it in the iphone to activate or what? I also want to keep my At&t number. Thanks for the help.

you will have to contact Tmobile to have them activate the sim card and switch the number over from AT&T

Call T-Mobile and have them start the port-in process. Once the process has taken finished, it will disconnect automatically with AT&T. You don't have to do anything on AT&T's side.
