Buying 8+ Setting up via iCloud

I'll be on a multi-city trip for several weeks. I decided to do the store pickup option in the city where I'll be on 9/22. And plan to use my iPhone iCloud backup to setup the new 8+.

How well does the iCloud restore work? I have a 30gb backup
Can I choose to setup iMessage & contacts only? Not sync photos

I would appreciate any feedback

With a 30GB backup, sounds like you have many thousands of photos native on your current device.
You could go into your iCloud on your device now and turn off the photos.
It will give you a pop up that it will remove them, but you have (30-90, can't recall) days to download them before they are permanently deleted.
As long as your back to a point/place where you want to reinstall them on the device within that window, you are golden....

Restoring from a backup is all or nothing, but you can choose what to backup. Just turn off all the stuff you don't want.

Didn't Apple used to offer a backup/restore in-store, or was that only when exchanging a faulty device through the Genius Bar?
